Why Melbourne Sucks
I’ve decided it is time to really go into this subject
I previously wrote
I really hate Melbourne. I used to love it, but now I hate it. After working two jobs in the city, I have realised that the people of Melbourne are oppurtunists. For example:
Trams and Trains: It doesnt matter if you get on a packed train at the first stop, and by halfway through the ride, it is emptied due to people changing to go to another line, and as you move to sit down, someone who just gone on, pushes you out of the way so they can sit down on the seat you were heading for.
Shopping: Many times Ive stood inline to buy whatever I wanted at the time, to have snotty girls dressed like they should be working at hooters to push in infront of me and to take longer to pay due to their phone coversation. Typically this consists of “ohhhhhh my godddddd” and other shit that I couldnt really give two hoots about.
There are many other examples, to me it makes me question Is Melbourne really the most liveable city?
I think not.
Look at our drivers for example, road rage galore. Our teenagers not only have no hope of ever owning their own home, or even going to university to study law or medicine due to Uni fees and interest rates, but they have no hope due to the way they are, they abuse people, they fight, they smoke and drink on trains, they show no respect to the elderly, who are the ones who went to war so these prissy little stuck up pricks could smoke and drink on trains. They live with a silver spoon in their mouth, a computer and playstation/xbox for every birthday and christmas and they expect the world to give them everything as we owe them something?
My new update and thought on this however is
I know that I have touched on this subject before, However I beleive that my previous rant about Melbourne was written hastely, and if I were to rewrite it like I am now, I could cover a lot more areas and dive more deeply into the basis of my dislike towards the city that I reside in.
I was born in Melbourne in the 80’s. Due to my fathers work, we were offered the chance to live in Perth when I was 6. There was also an offer to move to Canada. Both options would have changed my life dramatically. Our standard of living would have risen. However, we stayed put. The only place I have lived is Melbourne. I’ve lived through the times of the Melbourne Underworld, which was made famous from the “Underbelly” tv series which focused on the underword from the late 80’s to 2008.
I lived in the north suburbs for most of my life, I did live in the outer east for a while once I was an adult. I was born in Reservoir, and did not leave until I was 18. I then moved to Mill Park and while there split my time between there and Croydon. However, I am not sheltered by any means when it comes to surburbs in Melbourne.
I have experienced luxury living within the city, scummy drug affected areas like Richmond, and witnessed first account of what does happen in those big ugly brown units. I’ve also worked in various locations around Melbourne, in and out of the city. I’ve also experienced our so call shopping centres. Northlands, The Glen, Whitehorse.
The whole point of going deeper into this, is to try and establish as to why it sucks and how the current situation may have come about. Drugs, Crime, dirtiness and Alcohol problems.
Melbourne was established in 1835. 47 years after the first European settlement of australia. Our history, is that we derive from convicts. That is only the beginning however, After those first ships sailed into botany bay, and many aboriginals were murdered and driven off cliff’s, we gained population from migration. Italy, Greece, England, America, Asia, the middle east.
We are a “Multicultural” city. We depend on tourism, and overseas workers, Although this brings its own problems. Melbourne is not united. It does not matter how many “harmony” walks you have through the city, there will still be a great big wall dividing us.
We have Chinatown in little Bourke street, Little Greece, somewhere in the city, which is being taken over slowly by Chinatown, and then we have little Italy.
The problem in melbourne is that a lot of indian students are being bashed. It is not a case of white vs indian. The pricks who are bashing people, are also indian, they are asian, they are european, However, sometimes the population of migrants who have no manners shit me that much that I tell if they were not so rude and pushy they wouldnt get bashed all the time. I know, its politically wrong of me. But when I am in a shop waiting to pay for something and there is a long line behind me and a rude prick pushes in to pay $3.21 on a fucking credit card, then I get real shitty.
There is no assimilation with migrants, they are not above the rest of the population, just like the rest of the population is not above them. I will not have a muslim for example, speak to me like I am a piece of shit, and when this has happened, the arsehole has copped a barrage of abuse from me.
But the problem of melbourne, isnt just the rude pricks who visit here or live here. Our courts are being paid for god knows what. You can murder someone and get 5 years for it. But if you break a “civil law” then you are more fucked up. You can bash someone, and get a good behaviour bond, If you are a footballer, or sportsman, you can rape someone or assault them, and get off on the charge. And this is partly why, there is a life of crime, our “rolemodels” break the law and get away with it, so people think they can do the same and get away with it, and most of them do.
Melbourne needs tougher punishment, we need judges who will punish criminals instead of letting them walk free. And if international students or tourists break the law, deport them asap and ban them from re-entering Australia forever.
As with everywhere, we have Italians, Greeks, Spaniards, Croates, Serbs and so on walking around like they are top shit, the little pissy gangs who think they own “turf” hey, you think you own lalor station? Great, if so, clean it the fuck up, it needs a new coat of paint and the tiles need to be mopped. Same with those who think they own certain shopping centers. If I “owned” Northlands, or Chadstone, I wouldnt be sitting around getting high on spray paint or drinking in the gutter with my fully sik mates. I would be off spending all the money I would have from the profits. Oh wait, you dont have profits, boo hoo you dont really own it. Get the drift?
Melbourne itself has tourist attractions. Apparently. Melbourne aquarium, the MCG, Flinders station, Crown Casino, Bourke St Mall, Docklands, Melbourne Zoo. And so on.
Have you ever been to the Aquarium? I went a few times, my nephew and I managed to walk through it in 28 minutes. He was bored. Its not exciting, a lot of it is empty space with nothing to see. Wow there are a few different types of jelly fish in little tanks and then some ocean fish and snakes in a big round tank. Then you have more fish, and sharks downstairs, yes, because a tank of the same species of sharks as well as 500 of the same god damn fish swimming around in circles is so entertaining to see. And now there are penguins, the price rises because they have built another room, but you know what? The penguins are not that exciting.
The MCG?? Yes its so much fun to go there, but only if you like cricket or football. If you dont like those sports, dont bother going there. Flinders station you ask?? There is a new game, spot the one sitting on the steps wearing color. Unless you are gothic or emo, this isnt really an attraction that is worth seeing. Oh, yeah and I hope you dont mind looking at all the clocks with broken windows underneath them. You know how they got like that? Indians protesting against the violence, decided to vandalise them. Because breaking a law while protesting against someone else breaking laws is like so cool! And will surely make you get noticed.
Crown Casino? Yes, go waste your money. Its such a great entertainment venue, so great infact that the majority of people who go there are tourists.
Bourke Street mall has cleaned up, I admit that, Its a lot brighter at night time, and it is so much cleaner then it used to be, but in the same sense if you dont like Myers or David Jones there isnt anything else for you to do there.
The docklands are great, they are new, and rather refreshing, but there isnt too much there, apart from a failed wheel. The shopping is okay for now, even though you go once, you go twice, but its different shops as the previous ones have closed down. And as for melbourne zoo, everytime I have been there, masses of animals are never on show.
Melbourne has an issue with graffiti. It is everywhere, murals are not so bad, but “tags” are just disgusting and are all over the place. How can we be the most livable city when we look like a pile of dog turd that has been smothered all over the footpath?
Things need to be done in order to clean this place up. More police on the street? Tighter liquor licensing laws? Who knows. Maybe education needs to be in place in high schools and universities as well as tafes, about the effects of illegal and legal drugs as well as what may happen when people are under the influence. Maybe curfews needs to be in place for certain areas of the city, which I know would move the trouble elsewhere, and business would be lost. But something needs to be done, to punish those who repeatively go out and drink and then cause problems.
I saw a male being apprehended by the police on the corner of flinders and swanston street one night, about 8pm. He was very drunk and abusive, spat in the face of police and then told them “You cant touch me, im a visitor” Which makes me think, the problem isnt just in our backyard, it is also an international problem which unfortunately is pounding the wax out of our ears. But the question is, why are so many people suddenly acting out like this once they have a few drinks? Why here and not anywhere else? Is it because we allow it by not having a stronger justice system? Do we need to pull back on everything recreational and put more police out on the street to fight against this crap? Which would then lead to less police in other areas so crime or law breaking would rise in other areas.
New York had this problem once, Now its safer then it has ever been. They put police out on the streets. Maybe it will work here, but another problem I think we have is that our pathetic city council is rather happy to spend $240,000 on a silly logo that someone who just learnt how to make graphics in the ‘omgz its the internet” era of 1996-1999. Why not allow the people of Melbourne to design a logo or image that they think defines Melbourne? Why give it to an american company whose Australian headquarters are in Sydney?
The point is though is that the council spends so much money on crap, that they could be funneling that money to fixing the CBD. Would it hurt them to fix up the look of the streets? Cracked footpaths, or ones which have been lifted up because of roots growing from the trees? I know we have streetsweepers, for the road and the footpath, and they have no problem in running people over. But Melbourne deserves better then this. Sure we are a sporting mecca, but with the mix of sporting and alcohol, Melbourne isnt much else. Oh there is food too, Great isnt it, go watch some sport, have a drink or 50 and then eat a kabab. Melbourne needs a definition. Something that we can all work towards and achieve. Something that is realisitc.
Melbourne – the drunk town
Melbourne – violence is just around the corner.
Great sayings for now isnt it? Because really, it is our current definition. Why cant we work towards something more happy?Melbourne – Where all our worlds come together.
Multiculturalism at its finest, bringing together the worlds of many types of people in any shape or form. That does not currently describe Melbourne. Funny hey?
So in conclusion, Melbourne was a great place to live maybe 5 years ago, but now, it’s just another city on a map that has major problems. Its a blur amongst the terrain, it only stands out now because of its problems.

I was born in melbourne and lived there until i was 23. When i go back to Melbourne to visit I can’t wait to leave. Melbourne (the city) has some great things to offer (really it does) But the people, they are really are messed up. If they are not trying to out do each other then they are back stabbing each other. I hate to say this but most of the people that came from overseas after WWII were uneducated. My parents came from Europe and they had the same problem. Insecure and Uneducated!! I’m lucky I dont have that problem. But there are a few generations in Melbourne that is makes the whole city sick!!! Goodbye Melbourne, I only wish more people who were born there would leave and realise not all people are like Melbournians
37 daniel thank you!!!
after living overseas for the past 7 years, it was moving to melbourne that made me move back to england, Why? the people in melbourne SUCK, no one has anything worthwhile to say, no one does anything of value, they just slag of other people, god forbid you might want to make friends,
it was i realised that i was starting to become like them that i decided to get THE HELL out of there, don’t get me wrong, there will be assholes in every city, but i’ve been all over the place, and melbourne is BY FAR the most overrated
I’m from Melbourne, and have lived in 4 other cities–Sydney, Athens, London and Paris–and while it does not compare to grand cities such as London or Paris, the ‘complaints’ on here are ridiculously extreme. I’ll address a few of them, one by one:
1)Bogans. Isn’t this a problem with Australia in general? If we are honest with ourselves, we know it is. The advantage that Melbourne has over other cities, is that since we do have some real culture here, even if it isn’t comparable to Europe, it nevertheless has a ’stabilising’ effect. As a result, it’s much easier to avoid the bogans here than it is in other Australian cities, like Sydney.
2)Lack of conversation – again, an Australian problem that is not at all exclusive to Melbourne. And i’ve certainly had more meaningful conversations in Melbourne than i’ve ever had in Sydney. Finding people into cultured things is considerably more difficult in Sydney than Melbourne. But good conversation in Australia is quite rare. Probably even more rare than it is in N.Y.
3)Lack of friendliness – now this i agree with. ‘Melbournians’ are less outgoing and more reserved than Sydney, but i’d still argue that being reserved is more of an Australian problem, but it’s worse in Melbourne due to the weather and various other social constraints.
4)snobbery – guilty as charged. Melbourne has the best fashion, restaurants, art galleries, musicians and writers. This makes us feel ’superior’ to other Australian cities, but compared to Europe, it’s nothing, so bragging that we are the ‘best in Australia for culture’ is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. But i’m not cynical enough to think that because other cities ignore it, or place less emphasis on it, that they are somewhere more ‘honest’ and noble about their limitations.
5)Superficiality – worse in Sydney IMO. Melbourne is more fashion conscious, but Sydney is more trend conscious in general, and definitely favours the ‘out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new’ mentality.
6)Ethnic ghettos – again, worse in Sydney. Areas like Dandenong are like Double Bay compared to the Lebanese ghettos in outer Sydney. And ethnic ghettos are a problem in most major cities nowadays. America has a much worse problem than us, and so does England.
Completely agree with Mark. The people in Melbourne really do suck! For such ‘cultured” people (self-declared, that is) they have little to say and it is such a difficult task to connect with people in Melbourne.
The only reason why people think Melbourne is the best of anything and everything is because Melburnians rant on about it ALL THE TIME. Shock, there are restaurants, cafes, galleries, clubs, bars etc in other cities. It’s just that other cities don’t constantly rant on and on about such things.
Melbourne offers little to look at. The city is flat, ugly, windy, always grey and cold, the sun comes out about twice a year and overall it is a mighty miserable town. Don’t get me started on the skybus that runs from the airport to the city. If Melbourne was indeed an international city there would be a train to the airport. It runs through the most hideous parts of town and on the bus one is bombarded with tacky “Melbourne is the best” tourist information.
For all the culture, give me city where people are actually interesting and actually able to converse with people around them whether acquaintences or strangers.
Melbourne is definitely overrated!
This is true, I’m an immigrant myself and i’ve lived in australia for over 13 years and i feel that im being pushed around too much. The law here are weak and the systems here are set up all wrongly.
From 5 years ago I was a happy kid who dream of owning a little house and do charity work, planning trees and beautify this country. I also dream of owning big businesses and employ a lot of people to give them good life but neither of these dreams will work because of racism over here. Sorry to say but most of these racism don’t necessarily coming from Australian, they can be from immigrants. Sometimes, i feel like shit when coming across an Indian who lived here for long, they are useless and love to show off and looked down on their family who just came over who are a lot more friendlier and better than they are.
I feel like shit working with people everyday and i hate those little rascal that show off when they are in year 6 or 7. I hate the train in melbourne where it’s so dirty and so many disgusting people touching me. I also hate racist people who stares at me, criminal who got out of jail and warn people to respect them etc. So shitty country
I am a third generation Melburnian and I agree 100%. Oh, but you missed something guys – it’s also one of the worst police states on the planet! Road laws that make Nazi Germany look like a laissez-faire liberal democracy, surveillance cameras by the squillion, and if you are lucky enough to actually get on a train or tram instead of driving, expect to be monstered by unaccountable goons checking tickets. Then there’s the fun police, ensuring that any significant event or sporting fixture is dry, or at best serves tepid quarter strength beer. Victoria is a nasty little unfriendly gulag at the arse end of the country. It has earned its new nickname – ORWELLIA!
I agree that Melbourne sucks. I’ve been here 15 years & have ended up with fuck all friends. I’m from Adelaide, and in that time all my friends are from Adelaide. At first I though it was me, but I eventually realised that all my Adelaide friends also only had adelaide friends – and some are real good networkers!
It was dating in my 30s that illuminated me. i’ve been out on dates with melbourne girls; very picky, really worried about where you live (invariably the wrong place/side of the river etc.) whether you have a ‘cool’ job (which i do -but then I work too hard). I’m lucky, because i’ve been out with Italian, French, Japanese, South American, Sydney and Adelaide girls (bragging) and now married to a gorgeous Russian girl, but have no melbourne friends cause they’re too fricken picky!
If I sound frustrated it’s because i’ve lived in several countries, and have never encountered a place like Melbourne (actually Brisbane).
Spleen vented,
Thnak you

You are the awesome.
I’m from Adelaide, my boyfriend is from Melbourne and it terrifies me to think that maybe I’ll have to move to Melbourne. I can’t stand the arrogance of the people of Melbourne and I hate feeling constantly under fire from being from “boring old Adelaide”. I love Adelaide, we have problems like every other sq.cm of the globe but our streets are tree lined, our people are friendly and the scum is for the most part kept to the very very outer suburbs.
I feel anxious all the time about moving, I’ve decided to start tafe for the next two years to stall any discussions about me having to go to Melbourne, I can not handle the idea of living there.
It is fun sometimes, but I always have more fun when my bf comes to Adelaide. I only really like South Melbourne market dim sims lol.
I had a massive debate with my bf about what defines a ‘livable city’ and I believe that ‘livable’ is completely different for everyone and who can even judge that? to me ‘livable’ is not being stuck in a traffic jam for an hour and people being friendly and neighbourly. But I grew up in Adelaide and Perth so my version of tolerable living is probably much more simple than all the crap that goes on in Melbourne.
x
bios, what are you talking about? People from Melbourne aren’t friendly cause of the weather?! Seriously? The weather is far worse in Ireland, and those people are the amongst the friendliest I’ve met….
I still can’t get over how or why Melbourne is considered one of the most livable cities in the world.
Public Transport
first, the public transportation is bad for a number of reasons.
1) The infrastructure sucks – not by a train route? having fun on the tram that takes twice as long! Oh you want to go from Bundoora to Coburg? You’re gonna have to go into the city and then take a tram back out (faster to walk).
2) Retarded timetables – I come from the ‘Adelaide’ of Canada (sleepy ‘big’ country town), and our public transport runs til 3am everyday of the week. I went to a concert that got out at 12:30am on a wednesday on Bourke St, went to catch the 86, only to discover that they had stopped running…. Are they just looking to bump up the numbers of drink drivers?
3) VIC is one of only two Aus states that force international students (like myself) to pay full fare, apparently the close to $60,000 i’ll spend on tuition here, means I have the right to be stepped over. If I could do it over again, I would have gone to another state that was more welcoming….
4) Reliability – don’t have to say much here…
5) Cleanliness – let’s play how many urine stains you can spot on the train.
Cleanliness
Melbourne is a dirty city, doesn’t matter where you are, there’s always litter – I think this tells you a lot about the make up and pride of the city’s people.
Bogans/Hoons/Underbelly wannabe’s
The newspaper, tv and radio glorify this mafia image, and it’s pathetic and disgraceful. That some of these so called mafia people can write books and make a public living off what they did/didn’t do is really sad.
Bogans – oh look I just got cut off on the bike path by another kid on a dirt bike. Oh look another senseless fight at the bar. Oh look, another mullet. Oh look, another mullet and bumbag.
Hoons – I live off a busy street, and spend the night fantasizing about laying down nails on the road. Why grown men (mostly) get so wound up about cars and bikes is beyond me – I’ve always chalked it up with the other knuckle draggers who like being security guards…
Unwelcomeness
I’ll give Melbourne a bit of a break here, as I think most large cities aren’t too friendly (although not too many are as unfriendly as Rome!). With that said, compared to Adelaide (where I lived before), it is night and day. In Adelaide, people at shops, etc were always making conversation with me, especially after hearing my accent. Here, sidewalk chicken is like a past time. People are as rude as can be. I had a money run into my leg with her trolley at the supermarket, then just look at me and wait for me to move out of her way, no apology….
Weather?
I come from Canada, I lived in Ireland – another from Melbourne whinging about weather can seriously take a hike.
Most UnAustralian City in Australia?
I recently began using this, after a guy I didn’t know too well started bagging out the fact that I lived in Adelaide, and how much it sucks. I then asked him about what beaches are good to go to in Melbourne – he said there’s good ones in Tourquay. So the best beaches in Melbourne, are like an hour and half outside of it. (Swimming at St kilda and those city beaches is nasty! Even down in mornington I almost stepped on a syringe).
Driving
the road networks suck, toll roads are too expensive (are we just paying for the shitty art work?), and most of all the drivers suck. Again, I’ve driving in Sydney and Adelaide, and have not had the problems I have here. Police need to focus less on speeding, and more on dangerous driving.
…i think this is enough for now
Your generalisations can be stated about any city in the world. All cities have negatives. (The fact you say Docklands is a positive defies taste!..the Docklands is an artificial and expensive creation to imitate Sydney and it has failed).
I love Melbourne and Im not even from the place as I grew up n Sydney. My only grip besides Docklands is apartment blocks. Melbourne apartments (the older ones all through the suburbs) are ugly boxes surrounded by concrete carparks)
I visit this site for info about Melbourne which I’ll study for two years and I saw only biased comments from a couple of (probably) unsuccessful people who failed their Melbourne experience. Are you listen to yourself (ex: Broken heart…), It’s not a surprise that you couldn’t make any friends when I look your attitude. I can feel your roughness here in Istanbul. There isn’t any city with full of polite people or rude people, every city has both of them and excuse me but rude ones usually find the rude ones. Tell to people why the Melb sucks so we can learn something but be fair, don’t be a fanatic and a little modesty pls.
Hey sdjfnlsdk, Have you ever lived in any other city besides Melbourne. If you have then you’d see that most melbournians are so fucking anxious and trying to keep up with everyone around them. The city has its stupid little fucking ethnic gangs, its a fucking embarrassment to the rest of australia. They dont have that problem anywhere in australia except melbourne. Both my parents are from Europe, and they insisted that your heritage is European but you are Australian. I currently live in Brisbane, and the people there are so much friendlier. I lived in Berlin, London and Paris. The people are so much better, so much more humanistic and realistic. Melbournians are just fucked up insecure people that never did anything worthwhile with their life. Instead they either judge everyone around them or bash them like they did to the poor indians. Why isnt the melbourne community coming together to protest against the Indian students bashings? Because Melbournians are deep seeded racists. Its called modern day racism. Publicly they are about equality but privately its a different story! I never had a failed experience in Melbourne. I chose to leave melbourne because of a employment opportunity. I’m so glad I was able to break free of the distorted mindset that is melbourne
I’ve been in victoria just under 4 years now (originally from adelaide) and i cannot wait to go back to sa. i lived doncaster for 3 years and melton the past 10 months. i’ve done alot of travelling of the state and seen most of the sights but really find the entire place boring which is saying alot considering where i’m from. i have the same issue with these victorians being arrogant and talking down to everyone. they seem to be hung up on south australia hating them. does it make them feel like the pinnacle of envy or what? i find the people are self indulgent Fools who no nothing of the land outside the boarders but are quick to run they mouths. melbourne is a smelly shit hole. i moved over here for more opportunity but found that a joke. i know what is being said towards rude an pushy immigrants. living in doncaster was like a front row seat where i would constantly have trolleys ran into me or my car while im shopping. countless times i have pushed their trollys away to make them chase it. not too mention all the 2 bob snobs there. just a place to prove you dont need money to act better than the peasants (everyone). melton on the other hand is full of bogans and know it all’s. if your not from melton, your a dumbass. even tho most of the shit they talk is absolute crap. all in all i cant wait to get out of this shit hole of a state and move to the riverland. that’ll be the shit.
VICTORIA the place to leave.
on the artistic side of helbourne, its a complete joke. yeah the big record labels can be found here but most of the talent are from places like sydney, brisbane, adelaide. the only Reason it would be known for any form of art is because all the artist have to come here to get a contract (not always the case i know). back in adelaide i used to love to go watch local gigs, no two bands pounded alike. Since i’ve been in melbourne i have only been a few times. i hear all the local bands through my House mate and they all the same, dreary, one note, talentless, rush jobs. i Grew up in a music inclined family and im a musician myself. ive tried to get bands and music projects underway but every musician tends to get pissy when i talk about creating something new and involved. every single one has said to my face they want to sound like metallica, bullet for my valentine or any thing else. artistic?…..fail. just easier to copy whats been done appearantly.
another travisty of art is those eyesores that are placed along the east link and in other random places. most of melbournes art is just twisted pieces of steel on the side of the road. melbourne is shit all over Really
Hey Peter, your message shows that what I’m talking about. Listen to yourself: “Melbournians are just fucked up insecure people that never did anything worthwhile with their life”. Very nice comment.. Do you think this is a logical thought? Is it possible that 4 million people didn’t do anything worthwile with their life? And also you say “city has its stupid little fucking ethnic gangs” and then you are complaining about the racism of Melbournians!! What’s wrong with you people, if you don’t like the city and the people of the city, just move on, mind your own business, why is this hate? I’m reading about Melbourne for four months (it’s a lovely city with some problems of course), I’m already emailing with some good and polite Melbournians and I think I will love the city and will make good friends. I hope you too.. Regards..
I really dislike Melbourne. The people are opportunistic and rude, the roads are a pain to use and the public transport is useless.I have been to many cities around the world such as London and found them a great place compared with Melbourne . I’ve been visiting Melbourne ( i live an hour away now ) for 25 years now and i do my best to avoid going there now . I really wish there was a bypass so i could get around it when i go to SA . My partner is from Far North Qld and she hates it, and says its attitude is spreading like an infection through Victoria . Maybe we could put a wall around Melbourne and leave them to get on with it in peace ?
I hate melbourne and the rude, dirty people who live here… our city is ugly!
i mean come on whats up with those ladies wearing the ninja outfits it scares me i dont feel safe here
I dream of going home every day its depressing
i wish the indians would shut up they act like they are the only people who live here they so seek attention just piss off if you dont like it here if not just leave comments like the rest of us PEACE!
Wow ,you people sending in your ‘hate’ mail would freak anyone coming in contact with you on the streets of Melbourne. No wonder you hate Melbourne. You’re all emotionally , socially and definitely psychologically damaged and the scary thing is you don’t realise it.
As in every other city I’ve lived in over many, many years of travel and work there were times when I got a bad impression of where I was living ( London, New York, Paris , Windsor, Ont. ,Los Angeles, Athens etc. But in saying that I never damned the people or the place itself en masse. Just the diversity of these cities could not allow me to be so biased, racsist or narrow-minded as to hate or can them totally. Some cities do things better than others and others not so good, you just enjoy the bits you like and disregard stuff that doesn’t do it for you. If you’re out there looking for the ‘crap’….I tell you pick any city on the planet. It seems like you will find lots to criticise. And that says it all………….
Chalky, I wouldn’t call it ‘hate’ mail as such. I think Melburnians’ tendency to ‘put down’ other cities in Australia leads people to either think it’s a great city or to despise it in some way. If I had a dollar for every time I have heard people in Melbourne crapping on other cities I would be able to buy the damn place. So while some of us dislike Melbourne or just find it unappealing it is rare indeed to hear any serious put downs during conversations in other cities around the nation.
I left Melbourne and it was one of the best things I ever did. A lot of veneer, very little substance in that town. It’s all marketing.
Was born and brought up in Melbourne and used to think it was the best place in world (in that arrogant and ignorant Melbournian kind of way) until I really spent more than a week in another city then I realised things aren’t all that great or real. Actually, I came to Sydney for a 2 weeks and thought people wanted something from me because they were down to earth and friendly (compared to melbourne anyway)!!! I only really noticed how arrogant and backstabing all my “friends” were in Melbourne a few months after moving for good to Sydney.
When you meet Melbournians I usually get the “I am very important and don’t have time for you” feel from everyone, and that air of utter pretentiousness that makes me cringe when I reminisce.
If you can get over the cringing it is actually quiet comical city to go and tour.
I was born in Melbourne moved to Brisbane at 10 but was a frequent visitor visiting all the family at xmas every year. Finally moved back at 20 lived there for 4 years moved to England and then finally the Gold Coast. I enjoy Melbourne and it has heaps more going for it than Brisbane. Have you ever been to Brisbane? It has a seriously fucked up road network with many streets that are only one way in the inner city. Infrastructure here is a joke, the whole state was held back thirty years by Joh Bjelke Petersen who was scared of turning this little town into a big city like Sydney or Melbourne. Most of my friends are people who grew up here from expat parents like myself. Queenslanders are seriously regional people who dont have a focus outside qld. It is so boring in Brisbane you can see it all in one day. You also end up staying inside most of summer as you cant walk anywhere as its too hot and you would fry. We only have buses that stop at 9pm so fed up with this moved to the Gold Coast which has its own flaws but is an international destination with excellent public transport so you think Melbourne is bad try Brisbane.
MELBOURNE: THE HORROR OF GOOGLE STREETVIEW
First off, sorry for the sensationalistic headline. I was just practising my skills in tacky journalism.
I haven’t been to Melbourne, save on a Google Streetview tour and actually that experience brought me to this site when I Googled “dirty streets Melbourne”. I just wanted to double-check if what I was seeing in Streetview was accurate, because the city centre struck me as particularly “chaotic” and messy. Honestly! And I do not have any ax to grind in this matter. In fact I was thinking about possibly relocating to Melbourne and the experience changed my mind.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, and as a suburbanite, I do have a certain distaste for inner cities. But this was definitely something that caught my eye as being untidy and unattractive.
As far as other comments here about Melbourne, in particular people’s behaviour in public, the comments would just as well apply to Helsinki, Oslo, Toronto or London. I suspect this is a generational thing. On the one hand we are currently living a downhill slide in our western culture (music, behaviour, ethics, government, etc.) and it is affecting many areas of life. On the other hand this same phenomenon is affecting all of us as far as our ability to get along with each other (and why not even with ourselves). People get offended or harbour a grudge these days about things that only twenty years ago would have seemed completely trivial. Nowadays, the webpages of the internet are filled with people not only hating their old countries or their religion of birth; but also their old friends and even their family members!
What’s happening to us?
My gut feeling is that we are headed toward a major world war or other event which will at first make our lives REALLY difficult and harsh, but then (as at the end of the last world war) get us working together again and appreciative of the smaller things in life, not to mention each other’s company.
I wish all you Indians, Asians and Greeks and towel heads and all the rest of you fuckers would fuck off back to your own country.
I have visited many asian and indian country s and its all the same where ever you go.
You think we are racist and bashing and rude. Have a look at your own fucking countries and see how they treat white people.
Fuck you and your stupid blog cunt, if i ever find you, im gonna bash the shit of you, ya whingin useless cunt of shit
Aussie,
The only reason I allowed your above comment is because, i dont beleive in censorship.
I am a white australian. And your comment is seriously fucked up.
You have missed the total point of my blog post. And if you continue to threaten harm, I have no issue informing your ISP.
I am born in bred in Melbourne but have had the good fortune to 1) travel the world 2) and pass a lot of time in South America.
I find inately boring here. Melbournians pride themselves about the great night life, but really which major city is dead at 12.00am on Friday night like I find it here? And please, lets not even talk about midweek during winter.
The problem here is that the people here do not know any better, they are too busy with either their jobs, cars, sport or property; yes property, a favourite subject that basically bores the tits off a bull.
I have thought about this problem and I put it down to a couple of things, we are not inclusive (and thus do not how to really communicate with each other) be it with strangers, friends or families. The second thing is that we are basically ignorant, what does the average person here Know about other countries and cultures?
Melbourne it is time to grow-up.
Written by someone who has had enough and is planning to relocate to something bigger and better.
Except for M1, M31 and citylink, many Melbourne roads are bumpy and uneven, compared to China, Japan, European standard, or even Sydney. I mean the road surface is much poorer in some areas. It is a grid, so what? It’s got poorer surface and many potholes that can damage cars. And the stupid tram is in the way. I pitty those dirty looking Melbournians though I may have to go there again sometime soon. It’s time for Melbourne to grow up and look at their problems.
i just moved to Melbourne cause I ve heard so many people sayting that it is the place to live in Australia. I am from overseas and I love to travel, and I am in Australia quite a while now. It is the most beautiful country in the world. But Melbourne is a SHITHOLE. I am very disappointed and I don’t understand all the fuss about it. I can’t wait to leave this dirty place with all its rude, snobby and fucked up people.
Thank you Jaccerz for this, you made me laugh at least about Melbourne. And to all international students out there, if you want to come to Australia to do ur studies here, I really recommend you: Go somewhere else in Aus. Every other place I have been to was an absolute paradise compared to Melbourne!!!
